Resultss for Jessica Aguilar, a local Eastvale Realtor after running in Eastvale’s annual 5k/10k.
On October 19th, I ran in the 5th annual 5k/10k here in Eastvale. For the past couple of years, I have seen the signs and always took a mental note that I should sign up for it. Well, finally this was the year I did and I can’t wait to do it again!
Back in March, I started walking 2 miles a day. That was the deal I made with myself after reading Gary Keller’s, The One Thing. In his book, he discusses how it takes 66 days to create a habit. At this pace, I was able to determine 5 habits that I wanted to change and health was at the top of the list. Not being able to run even if someone was chasing me, I told myself that for 66 days I was going to put in 2 miles everyday. It didn’t matter if I walked, ran, or had to crawl, I was getting those 2 miles in.
Over the course of time, those two miles evolved into a life change. I would get up early to start my day and not only did the pace increase, so did the mileage. Over the course of the past 7 months, I have earned my way to alternate between 3 and 5 miles daily. It is an amazing feeling to wake up raring to go…to start the day with a healthy choice. Well, 3 days before the 5k/10k, I saw the banner one last time as I ran past Roosevelt High School and thought why wait…just sign up and see what you can do.
The sign up process was very easy and even allowed me to donate to one of our local schools. I chose Eastvale Elementary since that is where my son attends. It was a $30 entry fee and it was a good feeling to support my community while I pushed myself out of the comfort zone. My son had a baseball game early that morning, so I apologized and let him know that I would be late, however I would be there the second I finished the 10K. It was encouraging to hear him tell me he was proud of me and he understood that I had a goal and had to see it through. Elena, my daughter was just excited and in her 4-year-old enthusiasm said, “Are you going to race for ME? Are you going to win and get a ribbon?” I could only do my best and yes, I was going to win for ME!
Morning of the event, I jumped out of bed grabbed my lucky hat, laced up my shoes, and headed out to Roosevelt High School. I was a bit nervous as one generally is when they are doing something out of the ordinary. The line to get my bib was quick and then it was off to the track to warm up. A few stretches later and the participants were instructed to line up for the 5k. It was a mere 10 minutes later that the 90 of us running the 10k were given the green light to start. My goal was to pace myself and cross the finish line in 60 minutes or less. I was not used to running in a group, nor certain how fast I could go, so this seemed doable. The course was marked well and the first couple of miles went fast. Well, when push came to shove, I focused and ran my little heart out to the finish line in 1 hour 2 minutes and 54 seconds. I missed my goal by just minutes and now have a plan of attack to finish stronger in Eastvale’s next 10K.
“I was really nervous that I wouldn’t know where to go. Everything was clearly mapped out and loved when they cheered you on to the finish line. It made a difference for me”
